Wear Resistant Cast Alloys

Wear & Impact Resistant Parts

Wear is material loss on surface by means of several different mechanisms and it is a complex phenomenon. It occurs whenever surfaces come into sliding contact, even in the presence of a lubricant.

Wear resistant parts are used in many industries including: mining, cement, refractory, glass, ceramic, tile and steel making. Esfahan Malleable as a supplier of wear resistant parts, could help customers to do wear studies, material selection and part design.

Our value for customers is manufacturing +Durable parts and material selection services to cut the customer costs and decrease their equipment downtime because of maintenance and wear part replacement.

Foundries often have provided castings to customers without major improvement in wear life for many years. Esfahan Malleable has invested in research and development of new alloys, wear solutions and improving wear resistant of usual alloys in recent years.

In many cases the foundry knows the part application, If there is impact or not, relationship to other parts and the other necessary information to propose the best choice. Some time they should do wear studies and get user information to offer the suitable design and material. Have suitable choices, engineering tools and although systematic learning from experiences will help supplier to provide better solutions to satisfy customers. Innovation and creativity to combine usual alloys and designs also could be lead to major results in wear life extension.

The problem in material selection is that often the hardness and impact energy could not be increased simultaneously. So when designer want to increase hardness should scarify the toughness and vice versa. Actually hardness and toughness is a pair of contradiction. There are some advanced materials such as composites that could solve the problem but in many cases it is not economical to use them.

Anyway regarding to toughness, hardness, weld ability and machinability of alloy and the requirement of parts, designers should select the right material. The following table in summary shows the most applied alloys in wear application and their specification. Each alloy has some special weaknesses and strengths.

According to this table the best choice for the highest toughness and hardness is a hardened low alloy steel .Our R&D department have worked on a new alloy in last year’s and tested many different melt treatments and heat treatments. Finally the result was very interesting. Now we could produce one of the toughest steels by casting. The result is 48-52 HRC hardness and at least 50 J impact resistance in room temperature

By using this alloy- We named the alloy EMC50- Our designers have a powerful tool to increase wear life and decrease the costs. In many cases this Alloy could be used instead of AR plate made parts such as Hardox 500. Lower processing costs and nearly similar properties promoting this alloy in mining market.

Wear and hardness relation is a complex matter. In general everyone consider higher hardness as higher wear resistance  but a harder surface does not necessarily means a higher wear-resistant surface, especially when abrasion at high impact angles is the prevalent wear mechanism in a system. The prevalent wear mechanism(s) needs to be carefully identified when identifying a suitable and effective solution. One should keep in mind that there is not always a single wear mechanism acting on a surface, but more usually a multitude of wear mechanisms. So the cutting to ploughing ratio in abrasion wear is important factor in addition to hardness.
